At the 227th meeting, on 13 November 1995, Mr. Bent Sorensen, who had been designated by the Committee as its observer in the inter-sessional open-ended working group of the Commission on Human Rights elaborating the protocol, informed the Committee of the progress made by the working group at its fourth session, held at the United Nations Office at Geneva from 30 October to 10 November 1995. Sixteenth session 12. At its 260th meeting, on 9 May 1996, the Committee agreed that Mr. Sorensen would continue to act as its observer in the working group and took note of Commission on Human Rights resolution 1996/33 on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment as well as resolution 1996/37 on the question of a draft optional protocol to the Convention. -3-
