ESSENTIAL PRINCIPLE
All persons deprived of their liberty have the right to an adequate standard of living,
including adequate food, drinking water, accommodation, clothing and bedding.
This principle should be presented visually and remain on display throughout the
session.
BASIS IN INTERNATIONAL INSTRUMENTS
Using the Compilation of Instruments, the trainees should work in pairs in order to
discover the basis for this principle.
IMPLICATIONS
Before presenting these to the trainees, ask them to give their views on the importance
of maintaining adequate living conditions within places of detention.
Encourage them to think for themselves and to consider the likely results of poor living
conditions for detainees, prison staff and the wider community.
