Performance record
Also for the first time in 2016, the IOI organised a breakout session within the IOI breakout session
framework of the judicial dialogue at the European Forum Alpbach. The title at Forum Alpbach
of this interactive workshop was “Human rights on the run”. In addition to
Ombudsman Kräuter, who presented of the IOI’s work, Christoph Pinter, Director
of UNHCR Austria, highlighted the role of his organisation in the refugee crisis.
The multidisciplinary and multicultural group of participants at this seminar
discussed the working methods of national and international human rights
organisations and drafted suggestions for improving communication and the
cooperation between these organisations.
In the field of further education, a training programme on systemic investigative
proceedings was offered in March in Japan for the first time with the help
of the IOI. Another first-time-event was a training programme in Spanish,
which took place in Argentina in June 2016. Employees of Latin American
ombudsman institutions were thus given the opportunity to take part in a
multi-day workshop on complaint and investigation work. The NPM focus in
2016 was also extended with follow-up training in Vilnius, Lithuania.

International cooperation
National Preventive Mechanism (NPM)
In its function as National Preventive Mechanism (NPM), the AOB, together
with its commissions, is always interested in an intensive exchange of
knowledge and a close cooperation with other NPMs (see chapter 3.2.7).
OSCE
The AOB takes an active part in the OSCE dialogue on the challenges and
further development opportunities of National Human Rights Institutions
(NHRIs).
In September, the AOB sent an expert to an implementation meeting in
Warsaw on questions regarding the human dimension. This annually held
platform for democracy and human rights provides the opportunity of taking
stock of the implementation status of the human rights commitments in the
respective states and to discuss the associated challenges.
OSCE implementation
meeting on the human
dimension
An expert meeting organised by the OSCE (ODIHR) in cooperation with the
Council of Europe, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights
and the IOI brought ombudspersons and representatives of international
organisations and the scientific community to Warsaw at the end of the
OSCE expert meeting to
strengthen NHRIs
