Focus on the depiction of persons with disabilities in the mass
media – 1-year-study
NGO Forum 2016
This year’s NGO Forum concentrated mainly on the topic of persons with
disabilities. The event, which took place in spring 2016, was at the same
time the launch of a campaign dedicated to the sustainable change of the
depiction of persons with disabilities in the media. The aim of the campaign
is sensitisation and awareness-building as well as the removal of barriers. The
AOB used the campaign to support a study by media analyst Maria Pernegger
who has devoted herself to this topic. In the year under review, the AOB also
promoted the comprehensive realisation of a catalogue of measures on the
basis of the “National Action Plan on Disability 2012-2020”.

Public relations
Exchange with
representatives
of the media
The AOB continued to expand its public relations activities in 2016. With
press releases, press conferences and a monthly newsletter, the AOB regularly
informs representatives of the media about its work. The members of the AOB
are also available for interviews with journalists. The AOB informs the media
about its investigative proceedings and their results and provides statements
regarding draft legislation, events and international activities.
AOB website
frequently visited
The AOB website is also an important medium for information. The website
recorded 123,617 visits in the year under review, which shows a clear increase
compared to the previous year. Current reports and a large number of service
offers such as the online complaint form make the website attractive for an
increasingly growing number of users. The complaint form was downloaded
1,192 times in 2016. The website also supports networking with journalists,
members of government and other politicians, trade unions, NGOs and
associations. Everyone can access central information material on the AOB’s
investigative proceedings and the NPM’s findings, e.g. all reports to the
Parliament and the Laender Diets as well as a list of current observed cases of
maladministration.
Media presence
The AOB’s continued growth in media presence is attributable to the
strengthened media work. In 2016, there were some 3,152 reports about the
work of the AOB in Austrian news agencies, in print media and online editions
as well as on the public TV and radio broadcaster ORF.
