20 // DEMOCRATIZATION
ODIHR supported democratization efforts across
the OSCE region in 2017, promoting good practices
and building the capacity of governments and
civil society to help states implement their human
dimension commitments. With an emphasis on
promoting gender equality and diversity, ODIHR
worked to improve the political participation of
under-represented groups, including women,
youth, persons with disabilities and migrants.
ODIHR also contributed to strengthening
democratic institutions across the OSCE region
by providing technical assistance for reforms of
lawmaking processes and legislation. The Office
worked to ensure the independence of judiciaries
and diversity within them, fair trial rights, and
public faith in the integrity of the courts. Work on
freedom of movement and migration focused on
the importance of secure travel documents and on
migrant rights and integration.
