applicants paid for translation services in the asylum application procedure at the border.
According to the research, major difficulties are encountered by the authorities, when the asylum
seeker speaks a rare language and there are no certified translators in the Republic of Moldova.
For this reason, we consider it important the BMA / GIBP to adopt clear procedures for
ensuring the right to an interpreter / translator for foreigners.
2.4. Ensuring the right to legal aid entering the Republic of Moldova
The right to legal aid in the asylum procedure is realized through National Legal Aid Council
(NLAC). It provides free legal assistance to asylum seekers in the administrative and judicial stages.
In 2018, the NLAC, with the support of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the LCA,
developed tools to assess the quality of legal aid provided to asylum seekers by state-guaranteed
lawyers. At the time of the study, this criterion was not examined.
