Anti-discrimination 2 Monitorin public administration 2.1 Anti-discrimination 2.1.1 Discrimination on the grounds of illness or disability NGO Forum to strengthen the rights of persons with disabilities For some years now the AOB has been organising an annual NGO forum. Human rights topics and initiatives are debated with civil society and persons from the world of politics and administration. Current problems are discussed and attempts are made to find joint solutions. The NGO forums of the last two years dealt with the first National Action Plan for Human Rights of the Federal Government, which is regrettably not yet complete, despite intensive preparation. The 3rd NGO forum 2016 focussed on the topic of “Persons with Disabilities”. In three workshops more than a hundred representatives of NGOs and associations of persons with disabilities discussed the topics “Social services”, “Living and working” and “Persons with disabilities” with those responsible from the world of politics and administration. The depiction of persons with disabilities in the mass media was another central topic. A study presented at the NGO forum showed that the depiction of persons with disabilities in the media is not in keeping with the times and fails to meet the social and political objectives of inclusion and participation. The images often convey clichés that have nothing to do with real life and are perceived as discriminatory by those affected. This is frequently exacerbated by expressions such as “confined to a wheelchair” or “suffers from”. The conference formed the start of an AOB campaign, the aim of which is to sustainably change this type of depiction in the media. The consistent inclusion of persons with disabilities in the media world, the removal of barriers and negative stereotypes and a broad consensus in media policy for the implementation of inclusive measures will be necessary for this. AOB campaign Difficult search for barrier-free doctor‘s practices As long as barrier-free accessibility to medical facilities and doctor’s practices is not available nationwide, the search for barrier-free doctor’s practices has to be supported by a corresponding information service. Following an investigation of the lack of barrier-free access to doctor’s practices in Burgenland, the AOB conducted a nationwide ex-officio investigation of the information available on the Internet on the accessibility to and equipment in doctor’s practices for persons with disabilities. 35
