Staf working with people with antisocial personality disorders should recognise that a positive and rewarding approach is more likely to be successful than a punitive approach in engaging and retaining people in treatment. Staf should explore treatment options in an atmosphere of hope and optimism, explaining that recovery is possible and attainable. They should build a relationship of trust, work in an open, engaging, unprejudiced manner and be consistent and reliable. Staf working with such patients should receive proper training, support and supervision, preferably from outside the unit. This helps to deal with the emotional pressure and prevent staf burn‑out.
