THEMATIC REPORT 2017
TORTURE AND MIGRATION
IMPACT OF TORTURE IN
THE CONTEXT OF MIGRATION
The experience of displacement and migration can
lead to severely negative and complex mental health
problems. Being uprooted from one’s home due to war,
conflict, persecution or torture is traumatising, and often
compounded by perilous journeys to safety. People often
lack basic necessities such as food, water, shelter and
access to medical attention. The process of flight is also
frequently undertaken in dangerous circumstances, with
many of the clients in this report having fled not only from
state sponsored violence, but also from non-state actors
as they were fleeing across borders. Many clients from the
Middle East, have been forced to make dangerous voyages
on unseaworthy boats in the Mediterranean Sea.
