Money Laundering
In 2010, the OSR/CTHB developed co-operation with the FATF. On 16-18 November, the
OSR/CTHB contributed to the FATF Workshop on “Money Laundering Vulnerabilities arising
from the Trafficking in Human Beings and the Smuggling of Migrants” (Cape Town, South
Africa) and the first joint meeting of the FATF and the Egmont Group of Financial Intelligence
Units on money laundering and terrorist financing typologies. Partnership with these
organizations, as well as with other national and international institutions working on THB
and money laundering, were planned to be enhanced in 2011. This would be in close cooperation with the OCEEA and the UNODC to support capacity building for law enforcement,
prosecutors and judges on financial investigation and other related anti-trafficking issues.
Corruption
On 3 September, the SR/CTHB addressed the link between trafficking in human beings and
corruption in the session on “Preventing and Combating Corruption – a Global Answer to a
Global Scourge” at the Inaugural Conference of the International Anti-Corruption Academy
(IACA) in Vienna. In her speech, the SR/CTHB emphasized that corruption had been
underestimated as an essential underlying factor of THB, as both a causal factor and a
consequence of THB, including how current features of THB are linked to the systemic
involvement of corrupt officials.
