2.14 – WEAPONS IN CUSTODY
In facilities for custody awaiting deportation
or custody to secure departure, officers should
remove firearms before entering a custody suite.
Due to the significant health risks involved,
the use of pepper spray in confined spaces is not
a
proportionate
measure
under
any
circumstances. It should therefore be avoided
15
inside detention facilities.
2.15 – ADMISSION MEETING
An admission meeting must be held with every
newly admitted person, during which they
should be informed of the reason for their
detention. They should also be informed of their
rights.
During these meetings, special attention
should be paid to any indications of mental
illness. If necessary, a psychologist should be
involved. For these purposes, the detention
facility’s staff members responsible for
conducting admission meetings must receive
specialised training enabling them to recognise
signs of trauma or mental illness. In case of
communication difficulties, an interpreter must
16
be called upon to assist in admission meetings.
