UNDP-OHCHR TOOLKIT continued KEY MESSAGES Protecting Specific Groups 11While all human rights are interdependent and indivisible, NHRIs have special responsibilities to support human rights protection for specific groups and empower them to claim their rights. This includes people who are vulnerable because of their gender, age, minority status, indigenous status, disability, sexual orientation, or because of their internal displacement or refugee status, to name but a few. NHRIs and Business 11Today, NHRIs are uniquely placed to play a powerful role in advancing human rights in the context of business activities, as they are at the interface between government, civil society and the private sector, and between the international, national and local levels. 11What role the NHRI can play will depend on the organic law of the NHRI, and whether the law gives the NHRI the ability to accept complaints about private sector activity.
