International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT)
The International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) is an independent international health professional organisation which promotes and supports the rehabilitation of torture survivors and works for the prevention of
torture worldwide. The IRCT collaborates with rehabilitation centres and programmes throughout the world that are committed to eradicating torture and to
assisting torture survivors and their families.
The IRCT works toward the vision of a world without torture. Specifically, we:
• raise awareness of the need for torture rehabilitation and encourage support
for survivors;
• promote the establishment of treatment facilities around the world;
• work for the prevention of torture;
• fight impunity for torturers and work to ensure the rights of torture victims;
• document the problem of torture and collect results of research related to
torture; and
• work to increase funding for rehabilitation centres, programmes and projects
worldwide.
Recognised internationally for its work, the IRCT enjoys special consultative
status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and the UN
Department of Public Information, and observer status with the Council of Europe and African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
The IRCT network today embraces 142 member rehabilitation centres and programmes in 73 countries and territories around the globe, providing support
and hope for torture survivors, and acting as a symbol of triumph over the terror
of torture.
