51 Case No. 13/04882 After a conviction for assault and battery, a man’s application for a hunting licence was refused. The National Police wrote in its decision that the fact that the man had been given a suspended sentence of six months had weighed heavily in the refusal. The Ombudsman reviewed the man’s complaint about the refusal and noticed that the transcript of the judgment said 30 days suspended – not six months. The Ombudsman then asked the National Police to consider whether the error would give the police a different view of the man’s application for a hunting license. The National Police then reopened the case but the man’s application was refused again. The new decision by the National Police also emphasised that the man had been convicted of assault and battery. The Ombudsman investigates complaints based on the letters and other documents he receives from citizens. If some information is missing, he will ask the complainant or the authorities to send it to him. Case No. 13/00006 A website tempted with two skincare products on special offer but the buyer’s account was debited with the full price. The buyer could not find any physical address for the firm. The buyer wrote to the Ombudsman, who could not help her, however, as her complaint concerned a privately owned enterprise. The Ombudsman is tasked especially with processing complaints about the public administration.
